Motorcycle Repair: bike veers to the right with hands off, soft tails, center hub

Question
Hi Johnny---You helped me before with my S&S carb now the bike runs realy fine.  However I have experience a sort of pull to the right when my hands come off the bars.  The 91 fxstc was bought Fla. in 2001 with 1500 milesand has always pulled.  I tried to do the drop away adjustment to set the bearings.  No matter how I set the bearing it is difficult to get the wheel to drop away to the left as seen standing in front of the bike, (this is the side it pulls to).   The side with the caliper and rotor drops away with no problem. It even wants to go with the wheel to the left of the center line. Once I have tapped it to drop away on the calliper side (right in front of the bike) it is difficult to set the wheel on the center line.  It will just drop away againg.  I have to force it to go to the left drop away, probably 6 inches then pull it back.  Then it will center and drop away to the left, (standinding in front of the bike. I freed up the front end so there was no resistence from the cables.  Runing the bike with less bearing pressure did make the bike run straighter down the road but I incountered a wobble so I brought the tension in a bit.  There is a greas fitting in the neck.  What is this for?  Do you think by sitting around so long not being used has caused the bearings to bind in the grease?  How do I grease the neck if I need to, (how much grease)?  Do you think I should replace the bearings, ( the bike has 4,000 miles on it)?  Is a pull normal for soft tails?  So the side that does not drop away is the side it pulls to.  Why do you have to loosin the pinch nuts on the lower triple trees?

Thanks Steve

Answer
I would replace the steering neck bearings no matter what. The bike is a 91.. and the grease fitting in the neck is to grease the bearings but I think your bearing races may be bad. That would be why you can not get the Fallaway correct..Also check the offset of the rim to the center hub of both front and rear wheels and the spoke tightness. This could also be a problem if the front rim is not set on the center hub correctly.  Johnny
