Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha Virago 535, yamaha virago 535, stators

Question
Chris, I need some help. I have a 1994 Virago 535 that isn't charging the battery, I've followed the service manual exactly trouble shooting and it said it was the stator. It said I should be getting between 14 and 15 volts at 5000 rpm and i was only getting about 11.3 and it actually had about 12 when idleing so I know it wasn't charging. Then it said shoot the 3 wires that come from the stator agianst each other and you should get anywhere from .32-.49ohms or something like that, well i wasn't getting but like .12 so that told me it was bad also. So I replaced the stator and now it seems worse, from the 3 wires from the stator i'm getting anywhere from 12.0-40.0 ohms and noe the bikes missing like the timmings off but i didn't touch none of that since the stators mounted in the side cover. On a plus side i did get about a half a volt to the battery so now its at like 12.25 volts when idling but it goes down to 12.1 volts when reved up so it still isn't working at all. Where do i go from here, I hate to take it to a shop because i really ain't go the money? Please help me if you can. Thanks

Kenny

Answer
Hi Kenny.
Was the replacement stator a new or rebuilt one?  You could have gotten a bad one or it could have been wired in wrong.  It could also be grounded somewhere or you could have a short in the wiring for the charging system or main wiring harness.

That's about all that I can think of, offhand, that it is likely to be.

Check it out and see what you find.
Good luck.
