Motorcycle Repair: Re-jet, yamaha maxim, jet needles

Question
I have an '82 Yamaha Maxim XJ650 and am getting ready to go with pod filters and a shorter open exhaust.I've been hearing that I'll need to re-jet the carbs. What size should I go to?Thanks,

Answer
Hi Adam, check Factory Jet Kits web site for a kit for your 650. The kit will give you base settings for jet sizes based on what Mods you are making. typicaly you will increase pilot jets by two sizes, mains will go up two to three. The kit may or may not include new jet needles, but certainly it will need to be repositioned to enrichen the mixture at part throttle. Kits also may include lighter diaphram return springs. If Factory does not offer a kit try Dyno jet. good luck
