Motorcycle Repair: shifting to neutral, vance hines pipes, harley engine

Question
I have a homemade bike (from reputable parts: Harley engine, Bourget frame, Boyds wheels, Vance & Hines pipes, etc.) and it won't shift into neutral when the engine is on. When I kill the engine, I have no trouble at all. Where should I start? Thanks for your time, Chris. Robin

Answer
Hi Robin.
If it were me, I would start with the tranny and clutch assembly.  That is where the problem is located.  Since it is a Harley engine, I would check with a Harley mechanic for details.  Perhaps this is something peculiar to Harleys, or maybe not.  But I am certain that the clutch and tranny is where the problem is.  Perhaps the clutch isn't fully engaging.  That would mean a simple adjustment first.

Good luck.
