Motorcycle Repair: Stability, suzuki katana, oem tires

Question
Just recently when I get around 100 mph, I get a wobble in the front end.  It isn't like a high speed wobble.  It stops as I back it down to 90.  What are some of the possiblities of what it could be?  My bike is a 93 suzuki Katana 600F.

Answer
Hi Tre, these are the questions I really enjoy speculating on because there are so many factors that effect your machines stability. Starting with the most basic area we should think about tires and their profile and condition. The front tire may be suffering from seperation at high speed, this is a very common problem on OEM tires or worn tires in general. Inspect your front tire carefully and replace it if is worn or cupped. Next up the list is your steering head bearings. Typically loose or worn head bearings will cause a wobble at lower speeds on deceleration but can cause your problems too. Inspect the head bearings for binding or loosness. Inspect your cable and wiring routing for binding. Another interesting factor that can upset the chassis is the riders grip on the machines bars. When you reach the speed at which the wobble develops try relaxing your grip a little on the bars. If the wobble decreases or dissapears altogether then your holding on too tight. Another area to look into is airflow disruption, I have had certain helmets cause wobble, try adjusting your body/head positions and see if it improves or degrades the bikes stability. Give these ideas a try and let me know....thanks for asking
