Motorcycle Repair: carbs, air fuel mixture, yamaha virago 750

Question
I have a 1986 Yamaha Virago 750.  When I start it the bike idles and cracks open great but when I take of down the road it flattens out, won't crack open.  I have changed the air filter and changed the plugs still didn't fix the problem.  I have also put a new pipe on it and was told that it prob had to be jetted.  How do I go about jetting the carb, I have never really played with one. I am pretty mechanically inclined and would like to take a stab at it.  Would I be able to do it and if so how do I go about doing so.

Answer
Hi C.C.,

The advice was accurate. The carburetor's air-fuel mixture will need tuned to cure the flat spot.

Carb tuning often requires removing and installing the carbs numerous times before the a/f mix is right. The work is not easy. You must have patience to do this. You'll need carb synchronization tools, dial or verneer calipers, basic hand tools, and a variety of jets. You may need to make numerous trips to the local shop for buying/exchanging jets.

Spark plug conditions and throttle opening positions tell what changes need to be made to the carbs.

Send me an email. I'll return carb tuning info files that will assist you with the work.
