Motorcycle Repair: Speedometer, digital speedometer, speedometer cable

Hi bill

I know that you are a honda guy, but I have a general repair question.  I have a 1982 kz-750. When I bought the bike the speedo worked for about a day, then it konked out on me.  It lights up but doesn't read anything.  How do I fix it?

IS this a digital speedometer? Lights up but doesn't read anything sounds digital. IF not check the front wheel for either a speed sensor (with a wire) or a speedometer cable.
If it is a cable, remove it from the speedo unit and see if it is turning when you rotate the front wheel.
If it is wires, you will have to get a shop manual to check out wiring diagrams, troubleshooting, etc. Check all of your fuses, first!

I really don't know anything about this bike or its instrumentation...
