A light comes on indicating the engine is running hot.  When I am on the highway it doesn't come on but sometimes when I get in stop and go traffic for a short distance the light comes on until I get moving again.  The fan comes on at times.  The problem seems intermittent.  The Honda dealer lets the bike run in the shop and the fan comes on, the light doesn't come on for them.

 What you have could be a heat related short in the wiring for the thermosensor or indicator light.  This could also be related to coolant level or a possibly faulty thermostat or water pump.

Check those and see what happens.
