Motorcycle Repair: speedometer, yamaha 650 maxim, worm gears

Question
Hello Chris, I own a 1982 Yamaha 650 maxim.

I just had the front fork seals replaced a week ago.I have been riding since. Now the speedometer has stopped working. Is this something easy to fix. I have owned the bike since March 04, I dont think has been very well cared for.

Thanks Dennis Ecker

Answer
Hi Dennis.
Either the worm gear (the part at the wheel that turns the speedo cable) is bad, the receiver on the speedo is worn or the cable has broken.

Disconnect the cable from the speedometer, raise the gront wheel off the ground and turn it.

If it turns, then the receiver is worn and the speedo needs replacement.

If it doesn't turn, then either the cable is broken or the worm gear is bad.

Most likely, it is the cable.  Worm gears do not go out all at once.  Usually they start acting up and then fail.

Good luck.
