Motorcycle Repair: starting problem, starter solenoid, clutch assembly

Question
dear chris, i have an 1982 kawasaki kz1100spectre. it won't start. i bought a new battery, had the starter tested, it works. checked the solenoid. the manual says to try starting the bike, if the solenoid makes a loud clicking sound, then it works. checked the black wire at the solenoid when trying to start the bike, there is power. so please, if you have any other test or something i could try, let me know. thank you very much,,,,,MORGAN   PS - the problem started when my bike began to be hard to start. it turned over slowly and made that sound that a car does when the battery is low. then it wouldn"t start at all. just clicks at the solenoid when i push the start button. i had the starter motor clutch assembly  and flywheel replaced in july

Answer
Hi Morgan.
You had the starter tested, but was it disassembled and the contacts cleaned?

Testing the starter directly from a battery will turn all but the dirtiest motors.

Clean contacts are critical when the starter is in operational use.  When power passes through the solenoid, part of that power is syphoned off.  This can be enough to prevent a starter with dirty contacts from turning.

You need to also check the wiring.  There could be dirty or bad connections, or broken/shorted wires.  This also incudes checking the wires to and from the starter switch as well as the contacts in the switch.  If they are dirty, then the starter solenoid will not be activated and the sterter will not turn.

Be sure to check the wiring last as it is the most time consuming thing to check.  Check contacts and connections first.

Good luck.
