Motorcycle Repair: Norton head repair, norton 850 commando, welding process

Question
Hi,
I have a 1973 Norton 850 Commando and the exhaust threads are stripped. I have researched two different methods of repair. The first is to weld in an insert. The second is to machine out the area and shrink in a brass insert. Which one do you recommend and is there a shop in the North East that can do it?
Thanks
Mike

I have never seen any great results come from attempted welding process on a head. Once upon a time, it was done as a last resort. But with the rapid advances in techniques and technology these days it may be possible. A pressed in insert is the most common solution, but this must also be done by a top notch machinist.

The final solution should be determined by the folks doing the work. Examining the part in question is the best way for them to determine the course of action.

These folks are in western Pa.

If anyone would have the knowlege and ability, it should be them. Or they should be able to steer you in the right direction. Get back to me and let me know your impressions of their customer service. I need to keep up with these things.
