Auto Parts: Cam shaft sensor, chrysler concord, cam shaft

Question
What is a Cam shaft sensor  and  what is it's function to make the car run? The type of car I have is a 89 Chrysler Concord.

Answer
Hi Michelle,
You know it's funny you ask that, I just replaced one in my friend's 89 Buick LeSabre, lol.
Anyway, the cam sensor basically helps with the timing on older cars like that. It tells the cam when to turn based on the timing set by the distributor cap. Basically when they start going out, your check engine light will come on and I believe it's a message 42 that you get, anyway, then the car doesn't run very well because the cam could be rotating out of time with the rest of the engine. It should be on the passenger side of the vehicle on the end of the cam.

Have a great day,
Christina
