Motorcycle Repair: Honda GL 1000 engine backfiring, honda gl 1000, headgaskets

Sir;
Just finished replacing the heads and headgaskets on my 75' GL1000 and have a backfiring coming from the right side exhaust . The points are new as well as the plugs. I'm sure the carb's are not 100% correct as I am having a hard time getting the engine to idle. The timing is at TDC and the point timing as close as I can get it with out a strobe.
Got any suggestions to help me along ?

Hi James.
 I would get the timing light and make sure that the timing is dead on.  Also check the carb synch and get that correct and make sure that the carbs are clean.

Check the valves and make sure that the gap is correct all the way around.

Start with those and let me know what you find.
