Motorcycle Repair: 1972 Honda CB500-4, honda cb500, fuel residue

Question
bought this bike cheap-hasn't run for few years, but has been stored. Middle child is auto tech and has worked on bikes b/4. New battery in, all wires carry NO current. Also, is there a key for this bike? Just one in the seat right or no? M wants me to buy a whole new wiring harness, yes? This is a family project and I know I'll have more into (way more) but, its in fairly good shape original chrome fenders and gas tank with original pt job and lettering -only looks a few years old. Last question: am I crazy?

Answer
Hi Claudia.
Let me get this right.  You are trying to resurrect a CLASSIC motorcycle (which was the same type I had as my second bike, btw) and you are asking me if you are crazy?
Well of course you are; then again, so am I. :)  But seriously, if you can restore this bike to running condition and it is in as good a shape as you are saying, then this bike is definitely worth it.

A wiring harness is clearly in order, as is resealing the tank (seal out old fuel residue), replacing the tires (dry-rot), thorough cleaning of the carbs, replacing the fuel line, possible replacement of the intake manifolds (check for dry-rot first), new air/oil filters and new oil.  Also make sure that you do a complete break-in level tune-up.

If you don't already have one, get the repair manual for the bike you should be able to get one through the dealership, any decent accessory shop, online or through mail order.

As far as the key is concerned, normally the key for the ignition is the key for the seat.  If the key that you have works on the seat but not the ignition, then order a new switch and it will come with a key.  But do not lose the key for the seat, or you will need to order a new lock mechanism for the seat, which will come with a key as well.

Let me know how things go.
Good luck.
