Motorcycle Repair: 1975 Honda = Is there a way to get rid of the coils?, honda ignition coils, sherry sherry

Question
I would love to make my Honda run without the annoying and hard to find coils.

Is there a way to do this or am I doomed to have horrible coil problems?

My bike has been customized and the engine rebuilt.  It stillhas problems holding battery charge and has died on me repeatedly.  It has a kick start, but that is often difficult as well.

Thanks,
Sherry

Answer
Sherry,,,,,,,, let's get some terminology straight....

Coils are to supply voltage to the spark plugs... you can't have a running engine without them. You didn't tell me what model bike you have (Honda made about over 30 different models in 1975), but you can get aftermarket ignition coils (if you really need them) from Dyna Ignition products.

As you have found, these bikes, like cars, have a battery powered ignition system... dead/dying battery= no spark= no start. If this is your problem, don't blame the "coils."
Honda ignition coils seldom fail in normal service.

If your battery is not holding a charge, then it could be:
1)Bad battery.
2)Charging system components(stator windings, field coil (if it has one)problems, wiring to regulator and/or rectifier.
3)Ignition switch contact or connector plug problems
4)Something wired in on the "HOT SIDE" switch or to battery that is running the battery down when ignition switch is turned off.
5)Bad wiring connections or miswired during "customization."
