Motorcycle Repair: oil filters, mineral spirits, bill silver

Question
Every text I find recommends replacing the oil filter every 6000 miles, but cleaning and reinstalling it in between oil changes. What exactly do you reccomend using to "clean" the oil filter with? I'm assuming a solvent of some kind. Thanks as always!

Answer
Pat, I don't know what kind of bike you are referring to...

Most metal screen type filters can be cleaned with mineral spirits, but they generally don't need replacement in such short time frames.

Replaceable paper-type filters are not "cleanable" and could be damaged by some kinds of solvents.

Need more info here to try to give a clearer answer...
