Motorcycle Repair: battery, 1983 honda nighthawk, gererator

Question
I have a 1983 Honda Nighthawk 550cc, I saw that you were a Harley Mechanic but hopefully you will still help with this.  I constantly have to charge the battery after every time I ride.  The bike will only stay on for about 15 or 20 minutes and it dies.  I saw another article like this and he said something about a stator but the answer was not posted on the site.

Answer
The only thing I can do is compare yur bike to a harley, but I dont know if the componants are the same.

First you need to make sure you have a good battery. Check the water level and make sure it has a good charge.
Start the bike and using a volt meter check at the battery to see the voltage. Since you have a 12 volt system you should be showing at least 13 volts at the battery. If not hen the battery is not charging. Most charging systems have a stator, gererator, or alternator. You also have to have some type of regulator. If your batery is not charging then its the regulator or one of the above. Thats about as far as I can help on your bike, since I only work on harleys.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
