Motorcycle Repair: Hard Shifting 883, harley shop, pat kennedy

Question
Wondering if you might have encountered this problem before.

My wife's 1989 883 Hugger has started getting really hard to shift into 3rd and 4th, after warming up on the road for about 20 minutes. Started with just 3rd gear, now progressing into 4th.

I have taken it to the local Harley shop twice and they tell me they can't see anything wrong.

We had the 10k mile check up and all new fluids done last fall.

Problem started before I put forward controls on and has continued.

If you have any thoughts, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Pat Kennedy

Answer
Usually hard shifting or slipping is caused from either a bent shifter fork, the shifter cam which the shifter forks ride on or the small bushing the ride in the cam are bad. The only way I could really be sure is to see the trans myself. If the dealer took out the trans and checked it they should have bench shifted it before putting it back in.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
