Motorcycle Repair: IGNITION PROBLEM, worst case scenario, gl1100

Question
HOW ARE YOU CHRIS, I HAVE AN 80 GOLDWING INTERSTATE GL1100. WHEN THE BIKE GETS HOT IT CRANKS VERY SLOW OR SOMETIMES NOT AT ALL. WHEN IT IS COLD 2 CRANKS AND SHE TURNS OVER ANY IDEAS? THANKS.

Answer
Hi Tommy.
When the bike is running, does it charge properly?  Have you checked the battery with a hygrometer?

I doubt that they are the problem, but if either of those things do not check as good, then they would contribute to the problem.

Check the starter circuit wiring (with a meter) for shorts, then pull the starter motor and see if all of the internal contacts are good.  It may need new brushes or may need the contact points cleaned.  Worst case scenario, it may just need a new starter motor.

Good luck.
