Motorcycle Repair: 1982 Suzuki gs1100 gk, 1982 suzuki gs1100, electro magnet

Question
Mark
I recently started to restore a 1982 gs1100gk that has had numerous electrical problems.  The starter, battery, fuses, clutch & brake electric cables have all be replaced.  The only part not cleaned or replaced is the main wiring harness and by the condition of the harness it needs to be replaced.  When I try to start the bike all I get now is a single & sometimes multiple clack.  When we first got the bike it would turn over on occasion but not now.  Do you have any suggestions.  Once I get the bike started it can go for a safety and I should be back on the road.
Thanks

Answer
Hi Neil,

The clacking sound is an indication of a low charged or defective battery.

The clacking sound is likely the starter motor solenoid. When 12vdc is applied to the solenoid's winding, it becomes an electro-magnet and drws the high current contacts closed. This allows current to flow to starter motor. Battery may be charged enough to casue solenoid to click, but not overcome compression of engine.

Sometimes starter motors become so obstructed with carbon brush powder that they have similar symptoms as you've described.

Lastly, the starter clucth assy. can be defective.

The Suzuki GS series is plagued with electrical problems. Poorly designed charging system is result of most complaints/repairs.
