Motorcycle Repair: zzr600, clutch springs, friction plates

Question
hi its mitchell again one quick question in your opinion would a bad slipping clutch stop you from finding 5th and 6th gear thanx...

Answer
Hi Mitchell,

Depends: the gears should slide if friction plates are not too badly worn. If worn beyond specs, the clutch may not let gears slide and egage. Fiber and plates need to be disassembled and measured. Metal plates need to be checked for warpage and discoloration. Spring free length or rate needs to be measured.

Most transmissions will cycle through the gears with engine off. If necessary, raise MC support rear wheel off ground. Rotate rear wheel slowly by hand and cycle thru gears. Feel and listen for problems.

If the clutch slips a little bit, shim the clutch springs and see if the symptoms are gone. Shimming won't cause them to last much longer.

IF you decide to replace the clutch plates, replace metal plates, fiber plates, and clutch plates springs as a set.

Respectfully,
