Question
I've just gone thru a tank etching and coating due to rust. The carbs have been cleaned and the jets redone.  When I put new gas in the tank I had a problem with the petcock leaking at the back seal. When I removed the tank to remove the gas no mater what setting on the petcock, the gas would not go thru.  I removed the petcock and the gas, tightened the screws at the back of the petcock, reinstalled filled the tank with no leak.  Ran the bike approximately 10 to twelve miles and it stoped dead.  After approx two hours was able to reifre the bike, but only to have the same results.  Do I have a further problem with the petcock or do I have additional problems with electrical difficulties?

Answer
Hi Allen.
You may have a couple of problems, here, depending on th type of fuel petcock that you have.

If you have the "Harley-style" petcock, then it only has an on or an off.  That means that the fuel must be turned on to run the bike and turned off when you stop the bike.

If this is the case, then you have a clogged filter in the tank.  This filter is attached to the petcock itself and will come out with it.  If you pull the petcock and there is no filter, then take the petcock apart and clean it out.  You will, likely find a blockage in the petcock.

If you have the "instant-on" type petcock, like on all Japanese bikes and most European bikes, then you could have the same problem as well as perhaps not having the vacuum line attached to the petcock.  The vacuum line connects the petcock to one (or more) of the intakes, which activate the petcock when the bike runs.

Check those out and let me know what you find.
Good luck.
