Motorcycle Repair: wiring short, honda goldwing aspencade, fuse box

Question
I have a 1984 Honda Goldwing Aspencade 1200, several new lights were added to the front forks of the bike and the battery was just recharged.  On startup of the bike smoke was coming from compartment where fuse box is.  On closer inspection on left side of compartment there is a gray box with connectors coming out of it with eight wires on it.  The wires have started to get hot and are burning.  My questions are, 1-could either of the above have caused this to happen?  2-can the wires be replaced or does it need a new unit and about how much would this cost?  Can this be repaired by me or do I have to take it to a shop?

Answer
Hi Betty,

Q: Could either of the above have caused this to happen?
A: Yes. Too much current draw by the lights (load) and/or too much resistance in the wires/load causing the meltdown.

Q: Can the wires be replaced or does it need a new unit and about how much would this cost?
A: I would need to see the extent of damages to determine what needs to be done. If wiring insulation is melted it should be replaced. If the fuse box/accessory terminal box is melted or deformed, consider replacing.

Q: Can this be repaired by me or do I have to take it to a shop?
A: You shgould be able to perform all repairs at home. Work patiently and thoroughly.
