Motorcycle Repair: CBR 600 Running after starting, honda cbr 600, fuel starvation

Question
Mark:
I have a 1990 Honda CBR 600 that I have owned since new.  The bike has been very dependable and has given me 130,000+ miles of trouble free service.  Recently, I am having a problem with the bike.  The bike starts properly, but it dies out after a very short while.  I then shut the bike off, and wait a minute or so, and the bike starts up and runs OK as if nothing happened.  I belive this to be a fuel starvation problem, because when I spray starting fluid into the air cleaner, it will run and then die.
I replaced the spark plugs and the air filter thinking that this was the problem.  This did not help, as the bike had the same problem.  I shut off the bike and let it sit for a minute, and when I turned on the ignition key again, I heard the fuel pump clicking away, and the bike started and ran like no problem.

Any ideas as to where I can look next?  I don't know if this matters, but the bike is a California model with all of its emissions controls in place.  Also, the bike has not been modified form the time it left the showroom.

Thanks for your help and assistance in resolving this problem.

Answer
Hi Oscar,

You certainly know how to care for your vehicles. 130k miles is impressive. Hats off to you, Sir.

Your MC's problem

Oscar: The bike starts properly, but it dies out after a very short while.

Mark: How long does the engine run before it stalls? Was the choke used? If so, how? Does this happen daily? Does it happen with engine hot or cold? Any additional details is helpful.

Oscar: I then shut the bike off, and wait a minute or so, and the bike starts up and runs OK as if nothing happened.

Mark: Will the engine start and run normally the rest of the day (so to speak)? Does the problem only reappear next day after engine has cooled to room temperature?
