i own a 1999suzuki tl1000r. i wanted to know if my bike has transmission fluid? my bike has an oil drain plug and another plug behind it that opens with an allen. at the time i didn't know witch one was the drain plug so i took them both off. later i found out that the nut was the drain pug. but i cant find any mention in the service manual about what the allen plug is for. My gears are now locked up. Do I need to replace the transmission or the gears in the gear box ? any help on this dilemma will be greatly appreciated. thanks

William... don't know a thing about a late model TL1000 Suzi... I suppose that the "plug" you removed was part of a detent system or locator for a shaft or gear or shift drum.

Check the oil for any other parts that may have fallen in when you removed the plugs. If none then you need to lay the bike over on its side and look in the hole to see what you can see. I would definitely get a shop manual to get a better idea of what they designed and what the purpose was of the allen plug. Apparently you removed an important item, that may or may not require engine disassembly to repair or replace... or if you are lucky it will just go back in the hole where it came from and do its job again.
If there was some kind of a projection on the back side of the plug then it may go in and the transmission resumes its job. If the plug was holding other internal items in place and they have shifted out of position then you may be in for some headaches and out some serious $$$... I doubt that anything is damaged if you didn't try to ride the bike. Probably something has shifted out of place causing the gears to be out of synchronization with each other.

Get an owner's manual and a shop manual ASAP!

Thanks for the reply. I think I removed the fluid from the gear box. does the gear box use separate fluid from the oil ? and how can I replace it ? Thanks again for the help.

Answer
William, as far as I can tell from an online microfiche parts order service, all the oil is circulated throughout the engine. Only Harleys and Brit bikes have separate oil for the transmissions..... You fill it all at once. To keep you out of further difficulties, get a manual for this bike ASAP.
