Motorcycle Repair: Ticking sound coming from my bike, honda transalp, rear sprockets

Question
I ride a 1997 Honda Transalp XL600V which I do not think you get in the States. It is a 600cc, 4 stroke, water cooled, V-twin big trail bike with 44000miles on the clock.
I have recently noticed a ticking sound when I accelerate in low gears (I am not sure if the sound dissapears at higher speeds or whether there is just too much noise for me to hear it). The ticking does not seem to be very regular and I think it is coming from the area by my left foot but I am not 100% sure about that.
I have checked chain tension, and the front a rear sprockets are tight. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Paul,

Check valve clearances, too. Excessive clearance causes tapping sounds.

Maybe the chain needs lubed. Chains cause a variety of sounds.

Crankshaft or connecting rod caps make very loud, distinctive knocking sounds. You'll know if you hear these sounds.
