Motorcycle Repair: bike wont start, rear brakes, instrument light

Question
Hello, i have 1986 virago 1100cc, and I can't get it started. I understand that this bike has many safety fetures to prevent the bike from juymping foward then you start the bike, such as :

1 a switch to make sure the clutch is pulled in, befoere you try to start it.

2 an oil sensor to make sure there's enpough oil in the bike.

3 a switch to make sure the kick stsand is up.

and then there's relays etc ... etc... to make everytthing work properly, my question: what safety features are actually in the bike ?

And , is there an easy way to by pass the safety features to get the bike started?

the bike has a new elecrticl harrness, a new battery, every thing seems to be in working or=
der, I tried to bypass the clutch switch,by conecting the 2 wires together, was that a mistake?  There seems to be plenty of compression
and the starter is turning the motor, though it seems a little slow!

any help, will be greatly appriciated

thanks dave

Answer
Hi Dave,

Question: What safety features are actually in the bike ?

Answer: Side-stand switch, clutch switch, engine kill switch, neutral switch and instrument light, oil warning light, turn signals, hi-low beam headlight, ignition switch, Foot pegs, front and rear brakes on separate systems, fuel tank petcock, fuses & relays, and more.

Question: Is there an easy way to by pass the safety features to get the bike started?

Answer: Yes, but I think the problem is within the carburetors. You performed one of the pypasses already (not recommended).

Question: I tried to bypass the clutch switch, by conecting the 2 wires together, was that a mistake?

Answer: No, because you were trying ways to start the engine (process of elimination). By doing that, you would have learned that was or was not the cause of the problem. Hopefully, When done, the wires would be properly connected.

If I had a bit of history of the MC, I would be able to offer assistance. For example, was the engine running fine all winter and suddenly it will not start? Or, was the MC stored over winter and the first attempts at starting the engine, but she won't start? Include about any recent repairs or modifications. When was last tune-up? Plugs? Carb work?

Include your email address as requested. I'll return repair info via email.
