Motorcycle Repair: Carburator adjustment screw, suzuki savage 650, adjustment screw

Question
2000 Suzuki savage 650 single. What is the proper procedure to turn the mixture screw on my carb. I don't know how to get it to the almost stalling part and how many half turns in which direction. Can you guide me through this to make it as easy as possible.

Answer
Hi Moe.
You do not want to adjust the mixture.  It was set at the factory and is perfect.  If, however, you are talking about the idle speed, then that is adjusted with a gnurled knob which protrudes underneath the carb.  Just adjust it down to the point that you want.

If the mixture was previously screwed up and now you have to correct it, then what you need do is:

1)  Turn the mixture screw clockwise till it stops.  NOT TIGHT.....Just till it stops.  Then back it out 4 and 1/2 turns.

2)  Start the bike and run it for a while.

3)  Check the plug.

4)  If it is running rich, then turn it in a half turn and repeat steps 2 and 3.  If it is running lean, then turn it out a half turn and repeat steps 2 and 3.

5)  Do this till the plug comes out reasonably clean and normal looking.
5a)  make lessor (1/4 turn) adjustments as needed to fine tune it further.

Good luck.
