Motorcycle Repair: Brake light on Shadow Spirit 750, honda shadow spirit, honda shadow spirit 750

Question
I have a 2003 Honda Shadow Spirit 750. My brake light appears to be always on or else isn't coming on. There is no change in the intensity with the front or rear brake. Both filaments in the bulb appear to be OK and the brakes are working. What do I do next?

Could this be caused by the 1 1/2 inch riser extensions I put on? The brake cable doesn't appear to be stretched tight.

Answer
Hi Wendy,

I suspect one of the the brake light switches need attention. Click the link below to see microfiche parts view of the rear brake switch. The brake switch has adjustment for bralke light illumination. Loosen the round lock-nut move switch in or out to cause brake light to come on sooner or later with pedal travel. (part number 5)

Investigate and try adjusting this switch to cause a change with the brake light. Also, trace the brake light circuit wiring for problems. Check all connections and use dielectric grease on all connection to prevent water shorting.

View this link to see microfiche parts view of the front brake switch. Check the switch for rust, corrosion, insects, and dirt. Clean as necessary. The switch has adjusting screws to allow adjustment of brake light illumination. Slide the switch to cause brake light to light sooner or later with brake lever pull. (part number 1).
