Motorcycle Repair: those pesky points, bill silver, side question

Question
Hey Bill,
This is Jesse with the 1975 CL360 and the timing/points issue.
I can get the points gapped correctly and the timing is set correctly and the bike runs well. Then when I go to put the points cover back on it shorts out the right side point and runs like crap. Is there something else that would be worn out that would make me have to adjust it so far that it hits the cover? Or am I doing something wrong?
Side question: does the right point match with the right spark plug? Because the right point is hitting the cover and the left plug is fouling.
My CL360 shop manual is on the way!
Thank you for your time,
Jesse

Answer
Put a layer of electrical tape inside the points cover and see if that fixes the problem. Usually you have a wire connector that is position up too high which contacts the inside of the cover.

If the point contacts are hitting the cover and not the wires, then it is possible that there are non-OEM points installed. There were companies in Japan who made replacement parts, but they are not always very accurate.
Yours should have some kind of ND markings in them.
