Motorcycle Repair: 1980 yamaha 850 xs, yamaha 850 xs, regulator rectifier

Question
I have just got a 1980 yamaha xs 850 and the voltage regulator/rectifier has gone bad. I called around and everyone says this is common on that model. My question is this, is there a better fix to this problem than just replacing a part that may go bad again? Any aftermarket refits or parts from another year maybe? Any help would be great because I really love this bike and would like to be able to take trips without worrying about breaking down. Thanks alot. Chad

Answer
Hi Chad,

I don't know of any specific fixes for this problem, but you can help by inserting dielectric grease into the Reg/Rec's multi-connector. This will cut down on resistance, corrosion, and prevent water shorting.
