Motorcycle Repair: 1981 Yamaha Virago transmission, stator coil, crank case

Question
-------------------------
Also after the bike warms up it starts missing and backfiring really bad.  I pulled the plugs and cleaned them (didn't look too bad).  Coils don't start to go out do they? Aren't they either good or bad?  And where are the points in this thing?  Thanks again!

Answer
Hi Jon
Actually, there are no points on the Virago.  It uses an electronic ignition and doesn't need points.  It uses contact pickup coils instead.  They are on the inside of the high side crank case cover.  Opposite the stator coil (which is on the low side).

Coils go bad in many ways.  They can go all at once, or begin cutting out a bit at a time.

The missing and backfiring could be because the carbs are out of synch.  Chances are, it's overdue.  Synchronizing the carbs will put the timing back on track.  She should run like a rabid wolf, then.

Let me know what you find.
Good luck.
