Motorcycle Repair: Converting 84 Honda V65 Magna from 4in2 to 4in1 Exhaust, honda v65 magna, cb550

Question
Chris,

Goodday from Canada. As per subject, my friend and I hunted like hell for a reasonable price for replacement 4in2 pipes but could find nothing. After market stuff, sure, but the price was limiting. A cheaper alternative came from a guy on the net to convert to a 4in1. There seems to be a lot of guys who have done it with great success. Now my concern is going to be performance. Magna's were designed as 4in2's. Altering that I fear will cause problems. Specifically in carb terms. I am hearing some have had to re-jet their carbs and some haven't. Now I'm a new 'bike' guy and I really wouldn't know if I was causing irrepairable damage to the engine. Any thoughts?

Answer
Hi Rob.
 Many guys convert from 4 in 2 to 4 in 1 or 4 in 4 to 4 in 2 or 4 in 4 to 4 in 1.  My V65 is stock, so I don't know what a 4 in 1 will do for it.

Now when I changed my CB550 from a 4/4 to a 4/2, I changed nothing and my performance increased........very slightly.

All I can tell you is to check how the bike runs.  after you do the changeover, put about 300-400 miles on the bike and see what the plugs look like.  If they are ok and your milage hasn't declined enough to worry you, then you should be fine.  However, if performance drops and milage goes with it, then rejetting may be in order.

In a situation like that, unless you have an entire testing facility at your disposal, then it is all, pretty much, hit and miss as far as what your results will be.

Good luck.
