Motorcycle Repair: hydraulic clutch, hydraulic clutch, slave unit

Question
Hey Falcon,
I hope you are doing alright!  I have a question about a 1986 Shadow 1100c with a hydraulic clutch that seems to be leaking somewhere.  Fluid is not visible, however, the reservoir seems to go down after a few months or so.  Do I have a bad seal?  Is the fluid going into the crankcase somehow?  I had the system bled 2 years ago.  Maybe he didn't tighten something?  Any help or suggestion would be most appreciated.  Thanks much, Falcon!

Answer
Hi Steve.
I have an 84 V65 and I believe that they have similar cluch assembies.  I'll bet that the problem is as simple as getting the slave cylinder rebuild kit.

It takes about 30 - 60 minutes to do the work and can be done without any specialized tools.

once you get the kit, put the bike on the centerstand and remove the mounting bolts for the slave unit.  Pull it away from the bike and squeeze the clutch.  The puck will pop right out.  replace the rubbers and spring and re-install the clutch.  Then bleed the line, making sure to get the air that gets trapped up near the master cylinder at the banjo fitting.  It should be no problem then.

Good luck.
