Motorcycle Repair: Exhaust systems, suzuki gsxr 750, air fuel mixture

Question
I was wondering what exactly a full exhaust system and a slip on or bolt on exhaust syastem do. Ie. Yoshimura.  If i was to have a  pipe that someone stripped out, what damage would that do to my bike? How would that effect my performance, and horse power?  Would that effect my valves or engine in any way over time.  What does the packing inside of the slip on pipes do, besides muffel the bikes sound. Thanks for the help.  Peter Mclaughlin
P.s. I ride a 1999 suzuki gsxr 750

Answer
Hi Peter,

Q: I was wondering what exactly a full exhaust system and a slip on or bolt on exhaust syastem do.
A: Full exhaust systems allow greater volume of gasses to flow, increasing power. They are lighter than stock, increasing power to weight ratio. Slip-ons may increase flow a bit or noise levels, and are lighter.

Q: If i was to have a pipe that someone stripped out, what damage would that do to my bike?
A: I don't understand this question. If you mean open header with no baffle, a variety of damage may result if the carbs are not tuned to accompany the pipe. Not to mention citations from the authorities.

Q: How would that effect my performance, and horse power?
A: Depends on the tuning air-fuel mixture. Could go either extreme for performance and HP.

Q: Would that effect my valves or engine in any way over time.
A: Yes

Q: What does the packing inside of the slip on pipes do, besides muffel the bikes sound.
A: Little more than to keep sound at a respectful level. No packing may require additional carb tuning as exhaust flow is increased.

Remember, loud pipes are heard over great distances. It's better to keep it quiet and avoid Court appearances. Noise doesn't mean HP. Keep our image clean by being respectful of residents where you ride.
