Motorcycle Repair: Suzuki Bandit 600 - Vibration, suzuki bandit 600, suzuki bandit 600s

Question
Hi,

My name's John, and I live in Canada.  Last September, I bought a 2001 Suzuki Bandit 600S with 3400km on it.  It was in good condition, stored outside but well maintained, with all the recommended service and oil changes done.  It runs well, but i have a few questions about it.  First of all, it runs smoothly up to 5000rpm, but between 5000-5500 it vibrates loudly, and its noticable through the handlebars.  Above 5500 it quickly begins to run smoothly again.  I am wondering what this could be, if its mechanical, or possibly just vibration from loose fairings or something else.  Also, when i am starting the bike up, I have trouble with the choke.  Sometimes it warms up fine. Other times once it just starts, i'll try to open the choke to raise the revs up a bit, and either the bike will stall, or the choke will have no effect no matter how i adjust it, as though it isnt even connected.  Any help with these questions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

John Kjellbotn

Answer
Hi John,

The vibration can be from and rotating mass such as the wheels, brake rotors, chain, or tires. Worn tires often are the cause. You may or may not be able to see tire wear.

You'll have to determine the source of the vibration. Anything loose may make noise, but doesn't mean that is the source of the vibes.

Use the choke carefully, because excessive choke may easily foul the spark plugs.

The carburetors may have some varnishing inside. Very common with winter storage. Use Sta-Bil, STP, or other brand name petrol stabilizer when storing the MC. Follow label intel carefully. Too much stabilizer can cause for carbs to need cleaned, too.
