Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha FJ1200 mothballed, fuel residue, leak air

Question
I've had this FJ1200 since new, 1986. It hasn't seen any use since approx. 1995 and has been sitting in the garage unused.
I want to ride it this summer.  What do I need to check and clean or replace?  First the fuel system?  Is there any easy way to clean out the tank and carbs...assuming they need it?
Any process step by step advice would be so appreciated.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Jim.
I can almost guarantee that the fuel system is in desperate need of proper cleaning.

1)  Make sure that the engine will turn over.  If it doesn't, then it has siezed and will need to be rebuilt.  Replace the oil with new and you may want to use an oil system flush as well.

2)  Replace the fuel line.

3)  Reseal the tank.  This will seal out any contamination from old fuel residue.  DO NOT USE ANY OF THE OLD FUEL AT ALL (if any survived).  Dispose of it properly, instead.

4)  The carbs will need to be pulled and disassembled and properly cleaned.  You may need to replace all of the rubber in the carbs as well, since the bike has set for 9 years.

5)  Check the intake manifolds for cracks.  If you find any, you will need to replace them as that means they are dry-rotted and will leak air, thus messing up your engine operation.

Those are the biggest things that you will need to do.  Everything else is detail.

Good luck.
