Motorcycle Repair: Low idling and stalling problem in HD Springer, hd springer, air fuel mixture

Question
Hi Mike,
I own a 2003 HD Springer Softtail which I purchased in July 2003.  Shortly after the purchase, I installed new Screaming Eagle slip-on pipes.  There were no performance problems immediately after the installation.  Shortly after the pipes were installed I began to experience stalling when engaging the clutch from a stop.  In response, I adjusted the idle up.  At about 2500 miles I replaced the stock air cleaner with a high performance filter.  Not long after that I started again experiencing stalling when engaging the clutch from a stop even after running several miles and the engine hot.  I adjusted the idle up and it would run OK for a while then require another adjustment.  In addition to the stalling, I started to get backfiring and popping.  I took it in for service and they adjusted the float which stopped both temporarily and it ran better for about a week.  Now I'm back to adjusting the idle up to keep it from stalling when engaging the clutch.  The backfiring and popping continue intermittently.  The HD service folks suggested a jet kit to solve this problem since, they said, installation of the pipes and air cleaner probably made the mixture too rich.  What do you suggest/recommend?

Thanks, Paul

Answer
Installing the pipes and high flow air filter make your bike lean, not rich. You sould like you have a carberation problem. Probably the intermediate jet is plugged.
I would suggest installing a dyna-kit in your bike. It will richen it back up and the plug for the air/fuel mixture will be removed. At the same time the jet problem can be solved.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
