Question -
Hey Chris,
I am trying to bring my 2002 Yamaha YZF 600R out from storage for the winter.  Throughout the winter, I would start the bike up at least once a week.  Recently, it will no longer start.  I put in new gas today and the bike will still not start.  Is there anything you can suggest?  My bike is due for a tune-up, but since I cannot start the bike, I am going to have to either trail the bike or put it in the bed of a truck.  I don't have a truck or a trailer, so I am looking to find a way to start the bike so that I can ride it to the mechanic.  Do you have any ideas?  Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Matt

Falcon,
The bike is not turning over at all.  When I push the start button, it just continues to try and kick over, but it never does.  Is it possible that its the spark plug?

Matt

Answer
Hi Matt.
The spark plugs are completely unrelated to the starter.  You could have a bad starter motor, bad starter brushes, bad starter solenoid, or bad connection to the starter.

Check the components as per the test proceedures in the repair manual, check all connections for corrosion, all wires in the starter and ignition systems for shorts (use a multimeter for that), pull and disassemble the starter motor and see if the starter brushes are worn too far and if the contacts are nice and copper colored.  If those contacts in the starter motor are black, then clean them with contact cleaner and some thousand grit sandpaper (sand lightly).  Put the motor back together and on the bike and see what happens.

Now if the bike is just making a whirring sound when you hit the start button, then the problem is likely a missing tooth in the starter gear.  You could probably get a replacement at a bike salvage yard or order a new one from a bike shop.  Make sure that is the problem before you go replacing parts.

Good luck.
