Motorcycle Repair: Most problems fixed! one left, slow jet, drag pipe

Question
Hi Mike,

Only problem left from my 95" upgrade (2000 Dyna) is gas in my air box.  This one may have been there before the engine upgrade.

I think most of my previous problems were caused by a worn float needle had a ring worn into it.  I replaced the needle and removed the Dynojet parts. Installed a 48 slow jet and shimmed the stock needle with a washer.  No more smoke or erratic running at WOT.

I think gas in the air cleaner element is being caused by the accelerator pump.  I noticed with the air cleaner element removed (engine running) that the pump shot hits the slide and a of gas percentage bounces back out of the carb.  With the SE air cleaner installed the gas bounces off the slide and hits the back of the air cleaner element and eventually drips down to the bottom and soaks the cotton element.

Did you ever come across this?

I was thinking about shortening the rod the pushed the accelerator pump diaphram.  Most auto carbs have this adjustment built into the carb.  I don't see any adjustement on the CV.

I already replced the diaphram, spring and O-Rings that are part of the pump circuit.  No change.  Also twisted the pump nozzle to try to center the squirt, still no noticable change.

Any ideas on how I can keep the gas from collecting in the air cleaner?  The bottom of the element is pretty moist and the K&N oil is constantly being removed by the gas, not to mention the bad smell.

Answer
I had askedyou before about what exhaust you were running and you never answered. If you are running a high lift cam with a drag pipe you can have blow back which will cause the gas in the filter.
If you shorten the accelerator pump rod you will gas starve the bike when you accelerate. If you want to have an adjustable on you can go with an S&S carb.
Sounds like your problem is a bad diaphram in the top of the carb and not letting the slide move fast enough. Check it and let me know. You might have a hole in it.
