Motorcycle Repair: Oil Leak on Honda NSR, honda nsr 125, piston rings

Question
Hi Chris I have just bought a secondhand M reg Honda NSR 125. It has been running ok but just recently I have noticed I have an oil leak and it is making its way out of my exhaust. It looks like the gasket on the manifold needs replacing would this cause the oil to run out of the exhaust please.. also I have just run redex petrol treatment thru her because she is cutting out on me but she still cuts out after a few minutes of running..she idles ok and revs up on standstill but as soon as i have her on the road after a couple of minutes driving its like the revs suddenly hit zero, is this a fuel problem

Answer
Hi Richard.
A manifold gasket that is leaking could cause this if the leak is internal as well as external.  If you have a gasket leak, then replace the gasket and see what happens.

There is also the possibility of valve leaks and/or shot piston rings.

Amongst all of the other things to check, valves, gaskets etc, you may want to do a compression check and see what you get versus what is listed in the specs in the manual as to what it should be.

Good luck.
