Motorcycle Repair: 1983 vt 500 ascot ,engine rebuild?, crankshaft bearings, valve stem seals

Question
Hello bill.I have an 83 ascot(I am assuming you are familiar).I have put about 40,000 miles on this baby, and she has served me well. However,I can tell by the knocks, and noises that it is time to rebuild. My question is,  I was told by one of the local bike shops a bike like this does not get rebuilt, just gotten rid of.(Cost prohibitive)
I love this bike, and I would like to rebuild to get it back to it,s former performance.
Was he right?I am thinking the cam chain tensioner is what has been making the knocking(tick noise that usually goes away after it is warm)And I would not mind shelling out some bucks to rebuild. What is your opinion? Thanks for taking the time to read this,Doug

Answer
Doug... at 40k, I am sure that you will need new camchains, tensioners, valve stem seals and fresh rings/pistons/pins, plus a full gasket and seal set. On top of that a new water pump, thermostat, hoses, coolant flush or replacement radiator or at least a good cleanout. May need new camshaft/followers, valves/guides and springs, too.

Then you have to consider the clutch, transmission gears, bearings and final drive components. Probably needs stem bearings, swing arm bearings, wheel bearings, shocks, fork rebuild, brake overhaul for master and brake calipers, plus clutch master and slave kits.

While its apart... new carb kits, petcock/filter, hoses, vacuum lines, etc/////    Gets spendy even if you did all the work yourself. IF the cam bearings or crankshaft bearings are worn/damaged then it really gets expensive.

Too bad you can't drop an NT650 motor in there, but they didn't offer drive shaft option for that one.

If money is no object, go for it... I would check for prices and availability before I got too deep into it, though. Honda doesn't stock a lot of parts for 20 year old bikes any more...

Good luck..  Bill Silver
