Nissan Repair: 2001 Nissan Maxima

Question
So my Nissan Maxima (automatic transmission) won't go into gear, when trying to shift the shifter moves but doesn't lock properly and the indicator shows it's still on park.

Answer
Hi Kimberly -

Need you to check a couple things.

Your transmission is located under the hood on the driver's side of the engine compartment. Attached to it is a lever and cable that connects to your shifter. Have someone shift through the gears and see if this lever is moving relative to the shifter. You should hear a click at each gear.

If it is not moving, it could be your shifter cable, or the bushing at the console where the shifter attaches to the cable. The latter would be the more common fault. To get to it you will have to remove the console housing.

If it is moving relative to your shifter, then check the transmission oil.

Hope this helps -
