ANSWER: Hi George -

What kind of Nissan do you have? What year?
I assume you have checked the fluid level? And belt?
Does it make a groaning sound?

QUESTION: fluid is fine, belt tight, no groaning noises
truck has 40000 miles on it, mint condition
    just hard to steer,
         2006 pathfinder, thanks, George

Answer
Hi George -

If there are no noises, then I think it is the power steering pump going bad. The other thong it could be is resistance in the rack system or hoses, but that would create a groaning sound from the power steering pump.

Try loosening a pressure side hose, place a pan underneath and see if fluid shoot out with a lot of pressure when the car is started. If not, then replace the pump.

Hope this helps -
