Nissan Repair: How to remove internal rear view mirror, rear view mirror, nissan micra

Question
Hi,

I've accidentally whacked my internal rear view mirror (the one stuck on the windshield) that it came off at the ball-and-socket joint.
So, that's left me with two parts: the mirror part and the stem part still securely attached to the windshield.

In my attempt to remedy the situation, I've tried to push the mirror back in place to the windshield, with no success.  Then someone mentioned to me on the fly that I need to take off the stem from the windshield, click the mirror back to the stem, then replace the whole thing back to the windshield.

From searching the internet I figured out that all rear view mirrors have an anchor that is first glued to the windshield, then the whole mirror secured to that anchor.

So, how to remove my stem from my anchor (that is glued very securely to my windshield)?
My car is a nissan micra 2008, if that makes any difference.

Thank you for your help, in advance.

Answer
Hi Daniel -

I must admit we do not have Micras here where I live, but I am assuming mirrors are similar.

I do know that the base of the mirror is glued to the windshield. There is no way to remove that safely without cracking the glass.

The stem part is attached to the base with a set screw. Look closely from the bottom of the stem, and you should find it.

Once removed, you can snap that ball right back into its socket. Might take a little effort. You do not want to try and snap it back with the stem still attached, as the windshield will crack, and then you are left with a major issue.

Hope this helps -
