Nissan Repair: 93 Nisson Pickup-Ignition locked, no screws, smooth cone

Question
The ignition switch/cylinder has a button that must be pushed after the ignition is turned off in order to get the key out. Seems that the button is stuck in so that the key can be inserted, but the ignition does not turn on and the steering wheel is locked as well. I took the plastic cover off to expose the ignition but the button is stuck in. Is there a way to unlock this or do I have to replace the ignition switch or cylinder. Looking at the cylinder from beneath, I don't see how the unit is removed as there are no screws. Can you provide guidance? Can I repair this or do I have to take it to a dealer? I await your guidance.

Answer
Hi Michael -

First of all, ensure that the steering wheel is free and not in a semi turned position so it is resting on the locking device. Try moving it back and forth while working the key out.

If that does not work, then yes, it appears that the ignition lock has failed. Once you have the housing off, look behind the lock on the steering column and you will see 2 cone shaped screws. They are intentionally designed that way as a theft deterrent. You may have not seen it because it does not look anything like a normal screw or hex head. Just a smooth cone shape with no place for anything to grab.

I usually get it out with a very sharp center punch and a hammer. Make an indention on the outer part of the screw with the punch, then using that hole as leverage, insert the punch in the hole and tap with the hammer in a counter clockwise direction, allowing the bolt to move with the punch.

You can remove the ignition cylinder by either getting a paper clip and inserting it into a hole on the side (you have to have the key and turn the cylinder until it comes out). Or, it could be attached with a small screw, depends on what model you have.

The cylinder and the switch (lock) can be purchased separately, so you will not have to replace the cylinder thus not have to use another key.

Hope this helps -
