Nissan Repair: Engine Shuttering problem, vehicle speed sensor, nissan frontier

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2004 Nissan Frontier XE two wheel drive. Automatic transmission with 4 cylinder engine. Check engine light is one. Error codes indicate engine misfire and faulty speed sensor.

While driving engine loses power, seems to shutter and not pick up speed, just kinda shutters. I slip the transmission into neutral, then back into drive and the shutter stops and I drive as normal again, until it happens again. Happens several times a day. I've replaced the speed sensor several times, and had the vehicle tuned. Problem keeps coming back. Please help.

ANSWER: Robert,

Replace the vehicle speed sensor.  Replace the spark plugs.  Reset the code.  If the code comes back on the misfire you are going to need to look at the coil(s).

QUESTION: Ok, sounds good, but how can I adentify the coils?

Answer
Robert,

The On Board Diagnostics II will let you know which cylinder is experiencing a misfire and that is the one you change.  If you have a distributor and not individual coils it will be the distributor that is defective if is shows a random misfire.
