Nissan Repair: Brakes, turn signal switch, filament bulb

Question
I have a 1991 Nissan Sentra with no working brake lights, all other tail lights and turn signals work just not the brake lights. I've checked the bulbs and fuses and all seem in working order. Everything five looked up about the brake light switch is with lights staying on but mine wont come on. Help????

Answer
Hi Stephen -

May I ask how the bulbs were checked? I think you have a 2 filament bulb. excuse me for asking, but many times it is the bulb. One goes out, and not noticed til the other one goes.

Anyway, if the bulb is OK, fuse is OK, there is a chance it could be the turn signal switch, as the brake light circuit goes through there. Could also be a bad or loose connection behind the fuse box. There are a lot of areas to check, and the best way is to invest in a light type circuit tester with probe.

Do you have knowledge of electrical circuits and what areas to check? If so, work yourself from the rear of the vehicle, check the brake light socket contacts if there is power when you press on the brake pedal. If there is power, then it is the bulb. no power, then move on to the front area of the vehicle and test the brake switch if there is power there. Continue to check all components until you find the short, or disconnect.

Hope this helps -
