Nissan Repair: starter r&r, mercury villager, nissan quest

Question
QUESTION: got a '95 Mercury Villager and has Nissan parts/engine just like a Nissan Quest. Would like step by step info on starter r&r as mine is dragging and has to b tapped with hammer to start! any info would help.   Thanks!

ANSWER: Hi Jim -

I assume you have some basic tools. A flex head ratchet, extension, and socket set, as well as open end wrenches will do the trick very well.

Remove the negative side battery cable
Remove both wires going to the starter
If the nuts for the wires are inaccesible, you may remove the starter bolts, let it dangle and remove the nuts, but be careful not to damage the wire when the starter is left hanging.
Remove the starter bolts - I think they are 14mm

Install is reverse of removal

Hope this helps

QUESTION: Thanks Calvin! Can this work b done under the hood or under the car? How many bolts on the starter? I see 2 lookin under the hood. As u know, not a lot of room to work under hood, do I need to remove other things/parts for easier access?

Answer
Hi Jim -

If this is a front wheel drive, it is easier from the top. Should be only 2 bolts, and yes, sometimes access is a challenge, just be flexible, and move whatever is necessary, such as wires, brackets, engine components, etc.

Note the able in which it is removed, as sometime you have to twist the starter out. Reverse it when re-installing.

Hope this helps -
