Nissan Repair: 1996 Nissan Altima Linkage, nissan altima, transmission overhaul

Question
Hi,
I have a 95 Nissan Altima, and I've noticed that when I pull the shifter in to drive,  I have to ease it up just a bit before the transmission goes in to gear. I can't find any information on how to adjust the linkage.
Also,  I've had a few incidents when I am driving the engine revs up to 4 and 5k rpms but yet the speed doesn't increase. It does this extremely fast and  in a series of 3 times.  I know that  if I don't drive it with extreme ease, the car struggles to get into gear at 45 mph. I've watched the RPM gauge bounce from 3 to 2k rpms when doing this.
I just paid cash for this car at a Dealership so, I don't know what all has been done to it. The salesman couldn't advise.
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Heather -

First of all, the transmission shifter throw can be adjusted at the linkage where it enters the transmission. Extending the throw will help it stay in gear (make the linkage longer).

Secondly, assuming that it is not going into neutral during driving because of the above condition, I would check the transmission oil for proper level. If the level is OK, try changing the oil and replacing the filter screen, especially if the oil is dark in color (supposed to be bright red).

If all fails, the I am afraid you may have a transmission overhaul in the future.

Hope this helps
